A Tucumcari man remains hospitalized after an SUV drove through a beauty shop Friday.

Syliva and Woody Wampler were injured in the accident and airlifted to Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo. Police and EMS personnel responded to an emergency call at the Hair Shop, a beauty salon on the 800 block of South Seventh Street, at about 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Tina Garcia, the Wamplers’ niece, said Sylvia, who is a nail technician at the beauty salon, had suffered only minor bumps and bruises while Woody underwent surgery after the crash and is scheduled for at least one more operation on his leg.

Officer Dustin Lopez was on the scene Friday and said the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee told him she had accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while in front of the beauty shop.

“That’s about all I’ve got. We’re waiting for (the driver) to calm down a little bit and get some more information,” Lopez said. “It could have been a lot worse.”

Tucumcari Police did not release a report of the accident as of Tuesday and the driver of the vehicle has not been officially identified. It is not known whether any citation was filed as a result of the wreck.

Glenna Rierson, owner of the Hair Shop, was in the beauty salon when the accident occured. The beauty shop re-opened Tuesday morning.

“Oh my goodness, (I was) beyond belief surprised,” Rierson said. “All four of us that were in here, or five … had a guardian angel looking out for us.”
