Police: Shooting suspect arrested in Texas

A man accused of killing two Tucumcari men was captured after U.S Marshals and Texas Rangers got a tip and set up surveillance at a Conroe, Texas, Denny’s restaurant.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Cameron Welch said Muziwokuthula “Muzie” Madonda was arrested without incident Monday.

“Madonda surrendered quietly,” Welch said.

Welch said Texas Rangers had received information indicating Madonda planned to meet someone in Conroe at 1 a.m., Monday. Based on the information, the two agencies Montgomery County (Texas) Sheriff set up a surveillance operation at a Denny’s restaurant on Research Forest and South Interstate 45 in Conroe, Welch said.

“During the surveillance, a vehicle matching the description issued by New Mexico State Police entered the parking lot,” Welch said.

Welch said Modonda did not have a weapon when he was arrested. The vehicle was impounded and taken to a secure location where contents are being logged.

Madonda, 33, of Chicago, was arrested on two open counts of murder and tampering with evidence in connection with the deaths of Gabriel Baca, 37, and Bobby Gonzales, 57, both of Tucumcari.

The victims were killed by a single gunshot each, said State Police Lt. Eric Garcia.

The bodies were discovered Thursday in a room at the Tucumcari Inn, 1700 E. Route 66 Blvd.

“The autopsy revealed that Baca was shot in the chest and Gonzales was shot in the back,” Garcia said.

State police are calling the incident as a double homicide.

Garcia said Baca and Gonzales are considered to be Tucumcari residents, but it was unclear whether or not they resided at the hotel.

State police aren’t prepared to release details of the case, according to Garcia, who declined to address who found the bodies and where they were located inside the hotel room.

Tucumcari police said they responded to the scene around noon after a family member of the victims saw them through the room window.

The case was turned over to state police, who arrived in the evening, according to press release.
