The Tucumcari golf team hosted a tournament Monday at the country club golf course. Assistant Coach Jim Montoya said around 60 athletes from various schools came out to compete. Head golf coach Daniel Hutchins had the following to say about the tournament:

“We did well. The boys came out in third. We had a team of seven. First place was Raton and the second place was Artesia.

“We came out ahead of Portales, Taos and Clovis JV was here also. We only had one girl play in the tournament and she did well, she was, I think 12th overall, out of about 25 girls so that was good. And our boys we had a third place and an eighth place finisher overall in the individuals so that was good. We had one guy miss the state qualifying leg by one stroke and we felt for him, but he’s going to come around. Gabe Montoya’s done a great job this year. A.J. McElroy had the best round that he’s ever had this year. It was a lot of fun. I thought the kids all had fun.

“This next week we go to Santa Fe and Espanola. The next week after that we go to Ruidoso and play in a couple of tournaments there. We host district the first week of May here at Tucumcari, and that’s a lot of fun. The turnout will be great. Of course the course will be in great shape. Rex and Charlie, those guys out at the golf course do a great job of taking care of everything, and our district is us, Portales, Taos, West Las Vegas, Robertson, St. Michael’s, Wagonmound. There’s one more school up north I can’t remember that has one kid, but he’s a great golfer. Of course the team to beat is always St. Michael’s. They’re an academy and they have kids that do nothing but play golf. All of our kids are three or four sport athletes. It’ll be a good district tournament. We should have great weather by the first week of May.

“We just want to say thanks to everyone for coming out and supporting us. The booster club does a great job of being there and taking care of us.”
