As my efforts to lose weight and better myself continues, I seem to run in to the occasional Gremlin if you will. You know, Gremlins, those little mischievous mythical creatures blamed for the sabotage of aircraft during the 1920s.
Maybe you may recall the little menaces from Joe Dante’s 1984 movie “Gremlins.” Well, the main point is these little creatures cause chaos.
I have had a few setbacks along the way, but for the most part my plans and efforts are still very much in motion. A few nights this week I have gone to sleep late and when the alarm goes off at 6 a.m., I have to be honest, I am guilty of hitting the snooze button. A little voice kept saying “Just get back under the covers and sleep. You can make up for it tonight or tomorrow.”
As I lay there, another voice is heard. “Get up! Come on, don’t do this to yourself again, get up!” I sit up, get ready, grab my headphones, start the music and out the door I go.
During the day my work can be a bit hectic and at times a Route 44 cherry vanilla Coke sounds so good, which would go great with a green chili bacon cheeseburger. Again the struggle resumes. Ultimately, it has been salads and water at lunch.
Now there have been a few victories for the Gremlins. My dad has baked since I started this quest and as many people around this area know, my dad’s baking is near impossible to resist.
Though I did enjoy a few of those lovely baked goods, I did make up for it later with added distance on my walk and evening workouts.
I also have cut out the drinking, which I am surprised and happy to say has not been as bad as I thought it was going to be. That always was a fear of mine, as I used to enjoy a tasty brew from time to time, I thought it’d be like the time I quit smoking. Oh, did I mention I quit cold turkey? Those first three months were a nightmare. It seemed like everywhere I went there was someone smoking. I was not the most pleasant person to be around and was easily irritated.
So naturally I was afraid that’s how it was going to go when I quit drinking cold turkey for this diet. Much to my delight, that was not the case at all. Oh sure when the weekend comes around I think how good it would be to enjoy a nice frosty brew. However, I start to think about the promise I made to myself to follow through with this effort. After all, I am doing this for me, as well as my family and friends who have been concerned for my health.
I have been so lucky and grateful for the support I have received from my family and friends. Their encouragement has been an additional source of inspiration.
While it has been an ongoing battle with my own personal Gremlins, for the most part I am doing alright. I have noticed an increase in energy and I feel better.
In case you are wondering about my little furry friend, it is doing well. That rabbit is still very much camera shy and the last time we danced, it had me running around a wood pile and down an alley. His continued presence and interest in my progress shows me there is more to this lil’ rabbit than curiosity. In fact, I’m thinking of making him my mascot.
