The 3-11 Tucumcari Lady Rattlers lost in three to the 5-7 Robertson Lady Cardinals Tuesday night at Tucumcari.
The Lady Cardinals won in three sets, 25-4, 25-14 and 25-16.
“This is a much needed win for the girls,” said Lady Cardinals head coach Mary Bustos.
Bustos said the team needed the win to carry over into Thursday’s match-up with Santa Fe Indian School.
“We lost to them (Santa Fe) in three sets last time,” Bustos said. “This win is going to help excite the team about taking on Santa Fe at home.”
Lady Rattlers head coach Lawrence Sena said the team is 0-2 in district play with a match against Texico on Tuesday.
“They have to play with more confidence,” Sena said. “They need to get past their mistakes, lift their head and move on to the next play.”
This is Sena’s first year as the Lady Rattlers head coach. He said the team has a lot of potential they just need to play with heart.
“This team has shown sparks of greatness,” he said
Lady Rattlers senior Michelle Fazekas said during practice the girls operate well as a team, though during a game communication breaks down.
“We have to spend more time playing as a team,” Fazekas said. “There are times we are caught out of position due us not talking to one another.”
Fazekas said when the leaders on the team speak to the underclassmen it’s not to belittle or insult them but to lend assistance and support.
“We just want to help,” Fazekas said. “We have to listen to each other, play as one with heart.”
Lady Rattlers junior Esperanza Moncayo said the team knows their assignments and they just have to get past the mental mistakes.
“I moved here from Santa Rosa and have never seen a group of girls with such a desire to win,” Moncayo said.
Moncayo said the skill and desire is there, it’s just a matter of putting it together on the court.
“We have to push ourselves to win,” Moncayo said.
The Lady Rattlers next game will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Texico.
