Mesalands Community College recently received $5,000 from Xcel energy for scholarships, for students pursuing a degree in wind energy technology at the North American Wind Research and Training Center. As the number one provider of wind energy in the United States, Xcel has made it a priority to invest in their communities and environment. Part of that includes investing in programs that are training the next generation of qualified wind energy technicians.
“Mesalands Community College’s Wind Program was selected because Xcel believes in their Wind Program,” David Essex, Community Service Manager at Xcel said. “Mesalands has a great Wind Program that is providing the much needed training for the wind industry. Their wind training facilities are first class and their leadership is excellent.”
Xcel awards foundation grants in four different areas: Education, Economic Stability, Art and Culture, and Environmental Stewardship. Mesalands was awarded a foundation grant in the area of Education, after preparing a letter of intent that described their proposal.
The College has received over $20,000 in grants from Xcel since 2005.
The foundation grant donated by Xcel will fund five $1,000 scholarships for students in the Wind Energy Technology Program at Mesalands. Scholarships have already been awarded.
“We appreciate Xcel’s efforts in continuing to invest in education and in renewable energy,” Dr. Mildred Lovato, President of Mesalands Community College said. “This grant will assist more of our Wind Energy Technology students in funding their college education, as they obtain invaluable hands-on training at the North American Wind Research and Training Center.”
