Tucumcari High School will welcome a fellow snake to town on Thursday, when Amarillo Venom’s head coach Julian Reese speaks for Red Ribbon Week.

The Tucumcari Rattlers Student Council invited Reese, to speak to the students about the choices of doing drugs and alcohol and what it takes to be at the next level of college and pro sports.

“The students react well to the guest speakers,” said Tucumcari High School Principal Nicole Bright-Lesly.

Bright-Lesly said many students can still recall when Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger came to speak to the student body.

“I think it gives the students a picture, that these are everyday people who made the right decision,”Bright-Lesly said.

Reese, who played college football for the Indiana State Sycamores, started his career in arena football as the quarterback for the Amarillo Dusters. Then changing with the team to the Amarillo Venom, where he is now leading the team as the head coach.

He has also been a football coach for Austin Middle School in Amarillo since 2008. Reese also helps coach at Tascosa High School games.

“There is no place for drugs and alcohol at this point in their lives,” Reese said. Reese said the influence of alcohol is everywhere, professional sports, advertisements and movies.

“The youth of today need to put alcohol and drugs on hold,” Reese said. “They need to think about their future.”

Reese will be speaking at 3 p.m., at the high school auditorium. The event is also open to the community.

During Red Ribbon Week, the schools in Quay County promote events geared toward saying no to drug and alcohol abuse.
