Mesalands Community College is pleased to announce that Jimmy Sandoval, Board of Trustees vice chair, has been appointed to serve on the national Diversity Committee of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). The Diversity Committee promotes respect for and acceptance of diverse individuals and promotes awareness and educational opportunity for under-represented populations.
Sandoval says with the state ranked 49th in the nation in education, he hopes to make a positive impact on this national issue.
“The Diversity Committee is the voice for all under-represented students dreaming of attending college,” Sandoval said. “My goal on this committee is to discuss Title V funding and to make more federal and state grants available for students. I want to do my part to help students, teachers, and communities succeed.”
Sandoval will serve on this committee as an associate member for a one-year term. The committee advises the ACCT Board by strengthening the links with the minority membership, identifying issues that need to be addressed, and recommending solutions. Sandoval will also attend various national
meetings throughout the year as a member of this committee.
“On behalf of Mesalands Community College, we are very proud of Mr. Sandoval’s new appointment to this national committee,” said Dr. Mildred Lovato, President of Mesalands Community College. “This is a great honor for both the college and for Mr. Sandoval. He has a strong passion for diversity, and for finding ways to open the door of opportunity for under-represented students.”
Sandoval will attend his first Diversity Committee meeting Feb. 12 in Washington D.C. This meeting will be in conjunction with Community College National Legislative Summit.
