Peanut butter manufacturer Sunland has expanded its voluntary recall of all products made at its Portales plant, citing the threat of possible salmonella contamination.
In a press release issued late Thursday, company spokesperson Katalin Coburn said the latest recall includes all products manufactured in its peanut butter plant after March 1, 2010.
The expanded recall includes 139 new products not included in the company's initial recall Sept. 24 of some of 101 products.
Specifically, the press release said, the expanded recall adds 49 products that are currently within the manufacturer's recommended shelf-life; that is, the "Best-If-Used-By" dates have not expired.
More from the release:
The expanded recall also adds 90 products consumers may still have in their homes which are older than the "Best-If-Used-By Date".
The expanded recall also covers all previously identified peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, and tahini products as well as roasted blanched peanut products. New product categories being added to the list are several varieties of flavored butters and spreads, including thai ginger butter, chocolate butter and banana butter.
The recall stems from a federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP) investigation linking 29 salmonella illnesses in 18 states to Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter. That brand is one of many manufactured and distributed by Sunland.
Sunland Inc. sells its nuts and nut butters to large groceries and other food distributors around the country under a variety of brand names.
The CDCP's latest reports indicate 30 salmonella illnesses in 19 states are now traced to the Trader Joe's product.
As of Thursday, none of the 139 new products being added to the expanded recall list have been associated with any reported illness, Coburn said.
All products should be returned or discarded immediately, according to the press release. Coburn said consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products are urged not to eat them and to return or dispose of them immediately.
