Texico— House Bill 275, sponsored by State Representative Dennis Roch (R-Texico), was signed into law today by New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez.
The legislation increases retirement benefits for volunteer firefighters for the first time in 30 years, a move described by Roch as "long overdue."
"Given the enormous sacrifices these firefighters make to protect our families, our homes, and our businesses," said Roch, "it is proper that the state acknowledge these volunteers with a retirement befitting their selfless service."
The existing benefit—available only to those volunteer firefighters who attend required meetings, trainings, and drills—was established in 1983. Under the legislation signed into law today, their benefit will increase by 25 percent, and both active firefighters and previous retirees are eligible for the increase.
