The trial of Randall Jones of Tucumcari, facing murder charges in connection to the July 9, 2011, slaying of Shirley Pacheco, also of Tucucmari, has been delayed until May 12, 2014, according to Michael Rosenfield, Jones’ attorney.

Ninth Judicial District Judge Steven Quinn vacated an October 2013 trial date at Rosenfield’s request during a hearing held Thursday in Clovis, Tim Rose, Tenth Judicial District Attorney, said in a news release.

The delay was granted despite prosecutors’ vigorous opposition to a delay in the trial, the news release said. District Attorney Tim Rose and Assistant DA Kirk Chavez said the trial should not be delayed, saying the victim’s family had the right to closure and a speedy resolution of the case.

“I am frustrated with the delay in the trial in this matter. We are ready to present this case to a jury, have justice served and bring some sense of closure to Shirley’s family,” Rose said.
