The Dawson rail line, which until 1950 ran from Tucumcari to the coal mining city of Dawson in Colfax County, could come to life again as a series of cycling and hiking trails, according to County Assessor Pete Callahan.
At a meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday in Mosquero, there will be discussion of the possible development of the abandoned Dawson to Tucumcari rail corridor for cycling and hiking trail use. The meeting will be held in the Park Hall next to the Catholic Church.
A National Park Service representative is scheduled to present information on federal Rails to Trails projects and talk about preparing a Dawson Rail Trail feasibility study, Callahan said.
The line has been inactive since 1966.
Today there are more than 1,600 rails to trails pathways in the rails to trails system nationwide, Callahan said.
