Area high school winter sports teams will be in action this weekend on the hardwood and wrestling mats.

The Tucumcari Rattlers, Lady Rattlers, Logan Longhorns and Lady Longhorns will be competing Thursday-Saturday in the Melrose Tournament at Melrose.

“We are going to see a lot of good competition at this tournament which is exactly what we need as we start this season,” said John Span, Rattlers head coach.

Span said the Rattlers first game will be against Friona a Texas team that will have two games under their belt as they enter the tournament. Span said facing a good team is a great way for the Rattlers to see what they are made of and what areas they need to address this season.

Span said the Rattlers have 21 kids entering the program for junior varsity and varsity teams. He said this tournament will help him see where the players will be set entering the season.

Lady Rattlers head coach Gary Hittson said 15 players tried out this season, four seniors among them.

Hittson said the tournament will be a tough challenge for the Lady Rattlers as they rebuild. He said the seniors will have to take leadership roles and the younger players will have to step up as the season progresses.

The defending 1A girls’ state champions Lady Longhorns will be making their season debut at the Melrose tournament against the Clovis Lady Wildcats junior varsity team.

“Playing Clovis JV right out of the box will give us a chance to see where we are this season,” said Clair Rachor, Lady Longhorns head coach.

Rachor said he wants to see how the team will play as a whole without Marrisa Miller and Whitney Cordova, two seniors from last year’s championship squad lost to graduation. He said the addition of a junior point guard from Cliff, Lauren Robertson, will bring some experience to the position, instead of making a younger player step into that key role.

Rachor said this tournament will also allow him to see how deep the team can play on pressure defense.

Rachor said his goal is to play the pressure defense for an extended periods throughout the game during the season. He sad playing against Clovis JV, a team that likes to play man-to-man, will challenge the team to a fast-paced, demanding defense.
