Xcel Energy is warning customers to be wary of scammers impersonating Xcel Energy employees and threatening disconnection if immediate payment is not made, according to an Xcel Energy news release.
Several area customers have reported that impersonators are seeking to obtain payment either over the phone or in person, the news release stated.
Customers should use only authorized methods to pay their bills, according to the release. Customers should not give credit card numbers or any personal information to suspicious callers, according to the news release.
Xcel is asking customers to call customer service at 1-800-895-4999 and report any scamming incident to police.
Customers who have given credit card information over the phone to someone posing as an Xcel Energy employee should call their credit card company and follow the credit card company’s recommendations, according to the news release.
