The Tucumcari Rattlers are expecting a tough game against the Fort Sumner Foxes Thursday at the Snake Pit.
“We expect them to come here ready to play. If we don’t show up with that same mentality then its going to be a long night,” said John Span, Rattlers head coach.
The (8-9) Rattlers enter into Thursday’s non-district match up riding the momentum of two solid wins against Springer (66-40) and East Mountain (54-36).
Span said the two wins have been a good boost for the team, which has been reeling from the (57-55)loss to Mora on Jan. 14. He said the team has regained its focus and will be ready to play Thursday night.
Span said the (9-7) Foxes will be aggressive. Fort Sumner, he said, “is a tough team to beat unless you give 100 percent.”
He said he knows that coach John Wootton will have his team ready to play.
The (6-11) Lady Rattlers are a young team looking for their stride as they take on the (6-9) Vixens.
“It is little things that are still hurting the girls, they are not following through on their layups and our free throw percentage is low,” said Gary Hittson, Lady Rattlers head coach.
Hittson said the Lady Rattlers had shown signs of improvement in the Jan. 16 win against East Mountain (4-34). He said missed free throws proved to be a problem yet again during their latest loss (53-48) against Springer on Saturday.
The young team, he said, has been stepping up, but they still need to work hard to correct little issues.
Hittson said the games are only going to get harder as the Lady Rattlers begin district play in two weeks, opening with Santa Rosa.
The Rattlers and Lady Rattlers will play against Fort Sumner at 6 p.m., Thursday at Tucumcari.
The (9-7) Logan Longhorns and (13-3) Lady Longhorns will play at 5:30 Friday against Springer at Logan.
The (6-8) San Jon Coyotes and (2-8) Lady Coyotes will play at 5:30 Thursday against Floyd.
