After another successful weekend with seven grapplers placing in the top three in their weight categories, the Tucumcari Rattlers wrestling team will compete Friday at the Cardinal Classic at Robertson high school in Las Vegas.
“The team continues to show such great improvement and I can not say enough about the younger wrestlers,” said Eddie Encinias, Rattlers head coach.
Encinias said he is proud of how committed the younger wrestlers have been this season. He said he has always been able to count on leadership from his elders, but the youthful Rattlers have him stunned.
“What more can you ask for than someone who is willing to put the work and dedication day in and day out?” asked Encinias.
Encinias said even though district competition is right around the corner and state not far behind, he is already looking forward to next year because of the competitive spirit the young wrestlers have shown.
Friday’s competition may be the last before the district tournament that will be held Feb. 15 at the Snake Pit in Tucumcari.
Encinias said he is not sure the Rattlers will compete in a tournament in Los Lunas in two weeks, because this tourney has left his wrestlers worn down or injured.
“I want these guys to go into district competition fresh and have them show exactly how good they are,” Encinias said.
Rattler placers in the Sierra Blanca Invite at Ruidoso included:
1 — Jospeh Otero 132 pounds
1 — AJ Edwards 182 pounds
2 — Timmy Skinner 138 pounds
2 — Noah Marquez 106 pounds
2 — Austin Welch 106 pounds
3 — Paul Lucero 126 pounds
The Rattlers will compete at 10 a.m., Friday at Robertson High in Las Vegas.
