The Logan Lady Longhorns held off the resilient Fort Sumner Vixens Wednesday night in a roller- coaster of a game to advance to the District 3 1A championship.
“You can’t take anything for granted in this district,” said Clair Rachor, Lady Longhorn’s head coach.
And while the Lady Longhorns beat the Vixens 70-62, the final score does not accurately display how close this game was or how little anyone could take anything for granted.
At the end of the first period the Lady Longhorns held a 20-6 lead. They pressured the Vixens as they tried to advance down the court, forcing needless turnovers from double-dribbling and bad passes.
At the end of the first period, Vixens head coach Ben Segura said, “I told the girls they need to be patient and move the ball with the pass.”
In the second period, the Vixens, whose offense began to synch, took Segura’s advice to heart and the 14-point lead began to shrink. The Lady Longhorns aided in this effort by committing fouls that sent the Vixens to the free-throw line 17 times in the second period alone.
Once down by double digits, the Vixens went into the locker room at half time with a huge momentum boost after freshman Micah Crist hit a 3-pointer as time expired. Score at the half was 37-32, the Lady Longhorns leading by only five points.
The Lady Longhorns’ Rachor said the Vixens played tough and showed heart throughout the game. At half time he stressed to the Lady Longhorns to play smart, and that the free throws had helped the Vixens to get back into the game.
The score remained close until a small surge from the Lady Longhorns at the end of the third period gave them a seven-point lead.
The Vixens tried to close the gap in the last period but could not gain any ground as the Lady Longhorns matched them score-for-score.
The Lady Longhorns will play the Melrose Lady Buffaloes for the District 3 1A championship.
“We know that Melrose is going to be a tough game and we are certainly not taking them lightly,” said Kippi Webb, Lady Longhorns sophomore center.
Webb led the Lady Longhorns with 20 points (8,4-4).
“I believe in my teammates with all my heart,” Webb said. “We just need to go in there and play our best game and I know we can win.”
