Pay raises for teachers and instructional assistants are key components of a 5-percent budget increase that the Tucumari Public School Board of Education approved Thursday for the 2014-2015 fiscal year, compared to budget for the current fiscal year, which ends June 30.

The school board approved the 2014-2015 budget at a special meeting held Thursday.

The projected budget for  2014-2015 is about $13.3 million, $660,000, or 5.3 percent, more than the 2013-2014 budget of about $12.6 million.

The budget increases for the next fiscal year were led by a state-mandated 3-percent increase in teacher’s salaries, a 6-percent increase in instructional assistants’ pay, projected increases in utility rates and costs associated with the new greenhouse program at Tucumcari High School, Leola Patterson, TPS business manager, said.

The board also voted to allow Patterson to make adjustments to the budget as needed, as long as Superintendent Aaron McKinney is aware of those changes and they are brought to the board for final approval.
