Clovis police have made an arrest in connection with the homicide discovered Monday.
Eric “Spanky” Valdez is charged with murder. Police say he shot Jose Barrera, 33, of Tucumcari, in a dispute that involved Valdez’ minor daughter.
Valdez is in the Curry County Detention Center with bond set at $100,000, a police press release said.
Court records show a warrant was issued Friday alleging Valdez, 40, violated probation in a connection with a 2008 conviction for battery against a household member. The press release did not say when the murder charge was filed.
Barrera’s body was discovered Monday in the bathroom of a vacant house at 413 N. Sheldon St.
Police said Saturday an autopsy showed Barrera, 33, died from a gunshot wound to the head.
The 9th Judicial District Major Crimes Unit developed a timeline of Barrera’s activities, which led them to identify Valdez as a person of interest on Thursday.
He told police he shot Barrera, the press release said.
“The motive for the homicide stemmed from a conflict between Mr. Barrera and Mr. Valdez involving Mr. Valdez’s minor daughter,” the release said.
