The Tucumcari City Commission has approved a $37,400 grant agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture for the purchase of new emergency warning sirens for the city.
The commission approved to submit the grant agreement with the USDA and authorized City Manager Jared Langenegger to determine the best way to pay the additional $30,600 needed to purchases the sirens.
Langenegger said he will review what will best serve the residents, a direct payment of the remaining amount or accepting a five- or 10-year loan from the USDA.
These new sirens will give the city a new way to warn residents in the event of disaster or bad weather, said Mayor Robert Lumpkin, who explained the sirens will complement the existing text/mass call alert system in use by the city.
The commission also issued a proclamation to Mesalands Community College’s Fine Arts faculty member, D’Jean Jawrunner for her selection as the 2016 New Mexico Higher Education Art Educator of the Year, by the New Mexico Art Education Association.
In other action, commissioners:
• Approved a contract with Tyler Software totaling $114,000 for city and municipal court computer systems.
• Approved a liquor license application for the Tucumcari Columbus Club, which will use the license to serve alcohol to members and guests during special events held at the club on the 200 block of East Main Street.
• Approved a change order for the metro well field water transmission line project.
