Iowa man dies in accident

An Iowa man was killed on March 7, in a fatal accident involving a commercial motor vehicle and passenger vehicle on Interstate 40 East of Tucumcari.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, identified as Michael Ryan, 65, of Ottumwa, Iowa, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene.

At 4 p.m., New Mexico State Police officers responded to a report of a crash on I-40 near Mile Marker 331.

According to a release the initial investigation by the officer revealed the CMV was traveling east bound on Interstate 40 and the passenger vehicle was traveling west bound.  For unknown reasons, the CMV entered the median and crossed into incoming traffic traveling westbound and struck the passenger vehicle head on, causing severe damage to both vehicles.

The passenger traveling with Ryan sustained severe injuries and was transported to the hospital in Tucumcari, then airlifted to Lubbock, Texas. The passenger is listed in critical condition.

The occupants of the CMV were not injured.

The crash is still under investigation.
