Wintry weather impacts local teams

Comments 0 | Recommend 0

Area basketball tournaments scheduled to begin Thursday were adversely affected by the wintry weather.

* The Citizens Bank Border Shootout at Texico moved all first-round games on Thursday to the same times on Friday, while semifinal and final-round games will be played on Saturday. Participating teams are the Texico, Farwell, Melrose, Bovina, Logan, Estancia and Clovis junior varsity boys and girls, the Bosque boys and the Texico JV girls.

* The Grady Round-Robin boys and girls tournament canceled its Thursday schedule, and plans to play Friday and Saturday’s games as scheduled, meaning teams will play two games instead of three. Teams in that event include the Grady, Tucumcari and Vaughn boys and girls, the Floyd, Fort Sumner and Clovis Christian boys and the House, Fort Sumner JV and Clovis “C” girls.

* The Lady Lion Classic at Santa Rosa was pushed back one day, with Thursday’s games to be played on Friday and semifinal and final-round contests set for Saturday. Saturday’s eight-game slate starts with consolation semifinals at 10:30 a.m. and ends with the championship game at 7:30 p.m.

* Muleshoe’s boys were playing in the Shallowater Shootout and won their opening game Friday from Olton 54-30, but because the Mules were unable to make it back for their second-round evening game, they were dropped into the losers bracket of the 10-team tournament.

The Mules (2-2) play the loser of a Friday game between Lubbock Cooper and Lubbock Roosevelt at 11 a.m. (CST) Friday.

Muleshoe’s girls, meantime, could not make their Friday afternoon first-round game against Whitesboro in the Nazareth Invitational and the Lady Mules (1-7) were dropped into the losers bracket. Coach Val Acree said Muleshoe will face Panhandle at 12:30 p.m. (CST) on Friday.

Should schools provide an additional fresh fruit and vegetable snack for elementary students during the day?
Yes. If we teach children early about healthy eating habits they are less likely to develop health problems.
No. The school's lunch program is already designed to provide a nutritious meal for our children and that is all they need.
Kids will just eat what they want.
