Mexican holiday to be celebrated

New Mexico band Los Tropicales will bring their sound of Bolero, Tejano and Latin Jazz to the final concert of the Clovis Community College’s 2007-2008 Cultural Arts Series.

The annual Cinco de Mayo celebration is 6 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post 25.

Tickets are $13 and available at the CCC Cashier’s Windows or at the door the evening of the performance (pending availability).

Guests will be treated to dinner, dancing, live music, piñatas, and a few surprises at this special event which brings together families of all ages and ethnicities. Cinco de Mayo, which means “The Fifth of May” in Spanish, is a national holiday in Mexico and widely celebrated in the United States. It commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Sequin over the French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

“Cinco de Mayo is a rich cultural tradition for the Mexican people,” said Christy Mendoza, Cultural Arts Director.  “It reminds us what we can do if we work together as a community.”

Los Tropicales will play new arrangements and old favorites, including Tequila, La Bamba and Amor.

“I saw Los Tropicales last year at the Fiestas of Las Vegas (N.M.),” Mendoza said. “They made me jump and I wasn’t alone—the whole plaza was popping with fun when they came on.”
