Magdalena beats Floyd with big plays

FLOYD — Magdalena used four big plays Saturday to take control and turn back the Floyd Broncos 34-12 in 8-man football action.

Steers senior Reggie Peralto returned a pass interception 53 yards for a score early in the opening period, and it set the tone for the rest of the game.

That was followed by a 99-yard touchdown run by senior Robbie Zamora and a 64-yard run by senior William Guin, putting the Steers (2-3) in front 22-0 late in the half.

The fourth big play was a 70-yard fumble return by sophomore Daniel Hand in the second half, pushing the Steers’ lead to 28-6.

The Broncos (2-3) drove to the Magdalena 1 on their second possession of the game, but fumbled the ball away. That was followed on the next play by Zamora’s long run.

Floyd coach Rafael Roybal said the team hasn’t executed well, and he plans on working on conditioning during practice this week.

“That’s just all it is to it,” Roybal said. “We get people hurt and we get people that are tired and we don’t have anybody to sub for them.”

Floyd’s first score came after a short kick. Junior quarterback Hunter Terry completed a 58-yard scoring pass to junior J’Kobie Lee, closing the margin to 22-6.

The Broncos’ second TD came on a run by Chet Chenault, who finished the game with 60 yards rushing and 60 receiving. Lee finished with 58 receiving yards, while Terry had 95 yards rushing and 149 yards through the air.

Magdalena coach Dave Marquez said his team expected Floyd to run the ball.

“We expected them to be tough, and they were,” Marquez said. “They have a solid running game. They’ve always been a tough running team, and that’s what we prepared for this week.”
