Logan sweeps San Jon
The Logan boys basketball team cruised past San Jon for a 74-36 win in their first district game of the season.
The Longhorns (8-7 overall, 1-0 Class 1A District 4) raced out to a 33-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Logan played tough defense that triggered their offensive attack.
“It was a nice district win,” Logan coach Billy Burns said. “We came out with a lot of intensity and played a great first half.”
Rylan Calbert led the Longhorns with 18 points including two 3-pointers in the first quarter. As a team Logan hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter and a total of six for the game.
“We came out and handled our business,” Logan junior Brandon Rafool, who finished with 16 points said. “My teammates were setting me up with a lot of open shots.”
The Longhorns were tough on defense holding the Coyotes (5-9, 0-1) to only 11 points in the first half. Justin Pullen ended up being the only San Jon player in double figures with 11.
“We played really good defense,” Burns said. “Good defense turns into offense.”
Logan plays at Tucumcari Friday night. It is homecoming for the Rattlers.
“They play fast,” Burns said. “It is going to be a test for us on the road.”
Girls
Lady Longhorns head coach Clair Rachor said the team is off their game despite a 64-49 win over the San Jon Lady Coyotes (5-9, 0-1).
“We were not playing our game tonight,” Rachor said. “In the beginning we were not running our offense, we were just going through the motions.”
Rachor said that some of the girls are not feeling well and he had pushed them hard through the week’s practice.
“I’m not going to make any excuses,” Rachor said. “I don’t want to take anything away from San Jon but we were beating ourselves out there.”
Rachor said the girls forced some plays early in the game but calmed down as the game progressed.
“We just had to get back to playing our kind of ball,” Rachor said. “We came a lot stronger in the second half and played like the team we are.”
The Lady Longhorns’ (10-6, 1-0) offense led by Jessica Aguilera 17 points and Whitney Cordova 16-points, Logan outscored the Lady Coyotes 31-23 in the second half.
“The girls need to get into position to pay defense,” said Lady Coyotes head coach Steve Foust. “We were not getting back in time and were often caught out of position.”
Lady Longhorn’s defense improved greatly from the first half of play. They took away the passing lane and limited the open shot opportunities for the Lady Coyotes.
“The girls need to relax on offense,” Foust said. “They were rushing their shots and not controlling the boards.”
The Lady Longhorns will play Friday at 5:30 p.m. against the Tucumcari Lady Rattlers.
“They are a 2A school and they have some athletes,” Rachor said. “We are not going to take them lightly.”
Rachor said his team is going into tomorrow’s game with the mindset to take care of business and play strong.
“It is going to be their homecoming,” Rachor said. “We believe we got picked because we are a smaller team. We are going in ready to play and see if their focus is on the game or on the festivities.”
