Prep track: Portales second; Clovis sweeps

Ruidoso edged out the Portales girls, and Lovington blew out the boys field in the District 4-3A track championships held Friday at Portales High.

Ruidoso finished with 138 points, edging out Portales with 128. Lovington finished third with 107, well ahead of Dexter (36) and New Mexico Military Institute (11).

Jenna Wagner won the triple jump and long jump, and Portales took top honors in the medley relay.

The Lovington boys scored 172 points, easily besting Dexter (88) and Portales (85), who battled for second. The field was rounded out by NMMI at 51 points and Ruidoso with 39.

Cody Small claimed top honors in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.2 seconds for Portales.

Clovis had little trouble pulling repeats Friday in the District 4-5A championships.

The Clovis girls qualified two more athletes in their quest to repeat as 5A champions, and finished with 107 points to more than double up Carlsbad or Hobbs, who both scored 53.

Marivel Garza qualified in javelin with a first-place throw of 105-5, and Franchesca Cabrera got into the state meet by finishing second in discus behind Meagan Baglein — who broke a Clovis High record with a throw of 138-2.

The Lady Cats won all four relays and also got first-place finishes from Tara DeWitt in the 200 and 400, Antiesha Brown in the long and triple jumps, Caitlin Waters in the 800 and Lainey Flatow in the high jump.

The Clovis boys, meanwhile, won 10 events and finished with 102 points. Hobbs scored 58 to finish just ahead of Carlsbad at 52.

The Wildcats qualified in three events. The medley relay team took first, as did Stefan Mills in the 200 and Michael Johnson in the 300-meter hurdles. Edwin Lee finished second to Johnson in 300-meter hurdles to qualify for state.

Other first-place finishers for Clovis included Quran Wiggins in the 100, Shane Thompson in pole vault, Brandon Williams in the triple jump, Blake Wiley in javelin, James Howard in the long jump and Richie Chavez in discus and shot put.
