Reserve routs Dora

Due to devastating injuries this fall, nearly the entire Dora Coyote 8-man football team plays both ways, and the fatigue took its toll as the Reserve Mountaineers shutout the Coyotes 43-0 on a wet Saturday afternoon at Portales High School.

“For the last three games, we’re averaging one guy on the sideline per game,” Dora football coach Pablo Pena said. “When we go nine guys, it’s pretty tough. The kids are young, and they get tired.”

Reserve (3-3) scored all of its points in the first half, taking a 20-0 lead after the first quarter.

“We come out and we let everybody jump on us,” Pena said. “We’re young, so when our guys get out there — they’ve got some nerves. By the second half, we start to calm down, but by then the game is out of reach.”

Reserve sophomore running back Adam Fisher and junior quarterback Nolan Snyder contributed three touchdowns each for the Mountaineers in the rout.

“(Our guys) were hungry to play,” Reserve coach Don Cole said. “And they came today, ready to get after ‘em.”

Dora junior running back Jesus Villanueva injured his quadriceps last week against Melrose, while senior quarterback Josh Moore is battling a hamstring injury.

Despite the injury, Moore led the Coyotes on a late first-half drive that ended with Reserve interception return for a touchdown.

“We’ve had so many injuries that we haven’t had the exact same starting lineup for two games this season,” Pena said. “We’re shifting players on the fly and it’s hard to get consistency doing that.”

Pena believes Villanueva may be out for the remainder of the season.

“Coach Pena’s doing a good job with his players,” Cole said. “They were tough last year, so we didn’t take them lightly coming up here.”
The Coyotes fell to 0-6 with the loss.

“We’re going to try to work through it and try to get better,” Pena said.

Floyd dispatches Springer 54-0
The Floyd Broncos improve to 6-1 with a 54-0 home rout of Springer Saturday afternoon.

The win was Floyd’s fifth consecutive win this season.

Chay Chenault, fellow senior R.J. Berry and sophomore J’Kobie Lee each collected two touchdowns each, and senior Seth Gibson added another.

The Broncos jumped out on top early with a 22-0 first quarter lead, and the home team added 32 more points in the second quarter.

“This was a real big win,” Floyd assistant coach Adam Terry said. “We came out and played real hard and played well as a team.”

Floyd begins district play Friday night at Logan, before hosting Clovis Christian Oct.25.
