Clovis grad signs with Nebraska school
Comments 0Brittany Johnson signed a letter-of-intent Friday to play women’s college basketball at Concordia University.
Johnson, a 5-foot, 9-inch wing, averaged 10.5 points a game for the Clovis Wildcats as a senior last season, according to Clovis coach Jeff Reed. She also grabbed between four and five rebounds each contest.
Concordia is an NAIA school located in Seward, Neb., and the Bulldogs are coached by Drew Olson, who guided the team to a 26-9 record last year.
“She went out there a long time ago to visit the college. They saw film on her and they wanted her. They were trying to get (scholarship) money for her, but it wasn’t enough,” Reed said. “She really liked the campus and the area and really wanted to go there, so they got some more money for her and she was able to go.”
The resume for Concordia in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics includes a quarterfinal appearance in the 2008 national tournament and semifinal appearances in 2003 and 2005.
“I’m really proud of her, because she has really busted her butt,” Reed said. “She’s got a chance in the next few years to be a player, after she gets going in the weight program, works on her footwork and gets her shot released a little faster.”
“She’s a scrapper,” he added. “Definitely a player who could help when she’s a junior or a senior.”
