CHS teams move up in state swimming standings
ALBUQUERQUE — If nothing else, the Clovis High swim teams accomplished one thing in this year’s state meet at Albuquerque Academy — they moved up in the standings.
Clovis’ girls finished 11th with 68 points while the boys were 15th with 47, scoring in six girls and three boys events in Saturday’s finals. Each team was five places better than a year ago.
Coach Vincent de Maio said he was pleased with his squads’ overall performance.
“We’re a young team, and that’s a big step for them,” he said.
Host Academy cruised to both team titles, winning the boys division with 288 points to 253 for runnerup Eldorado and taking girls competition with 334 1/2 points to 268 for second-place Los Alamos. Twenty-six boys teams and 27 girls squads scored points.
Junior Jill Southard was involved in four of the girls’ scoring events. She finished sixth in the 500 freestyle in a time of 5 minutes, 28.65 seconds and ninth in the 100 butterfly — or first in the consolation bracket — at 1:02.97.
She also swam a leg on the 200 medley relay team, which was eighth in 1:58.7, and the 400 freestyle relay, which came in seventh and broke the school record with a time of 3:53.37.
Eighth-graders Madison Silveira and Caitlin Dial earned the other places for the Lady Wildcats. Silveira was 12th in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.56 while Dial finished 16th in the 200 freestyle in 2:09.94.
The boys set records in both of their relay events on Saturday, with the 400 freestyle finishing ninth in 3:28.14 and the 200 medley placing 10th in 1:48.24.
De Maio said the 400 freestyle relay would have been sixth in the championship race with the time it swam on Saturday.
“I’m real proud of them coming back today and setting a school record,” he said.
In the 500 freestyle, freshmen Lucas Brock and Brock Smith scored. Brock posted a personal-best time of 5:00.74 to finish seventh, while Smith was 14th at 5:14.68.
Brock also missed out on a chance to score in the 100 butterfly when he was DQed for a false start.
De Maio said it’s all part of the process.
“The good news is we have young swimmers,” he said. “The bad news is we have young swimmers. But they swam well here in breaking 10 school records.”
