Train derails near Nara Visa

Union Pacific railroad crews are clearing the last of the wreckage of a multi-car derailment that occurred late Friday night outside of Nara Visa on U.S. Highway 54.

Train service along the main track was interrupted for six hours, said railroad officials.

Union Pacific's Director, Corporate Communications Tom Lange said the train consisted of 75 cars.

Lange said the derailment occurred at 11:07 p.m Friday Sept. 25. He said 19 cars were derailed, which were carrying primarily auto parts along with other mixed freight.

Lange said no injuries or hazardous material releases were reported. He said the cause of the derailment is still under investigation and will be for some time.

Cargo containers that were not severely damaged or ripped open from the derailment were loaded onto semi tractor trucks.

Lange said the track re-opened at 5:25 a.m. Saturday Sept. 26. He said the first train passed through that section of the tracks at 5:50 a.m.

On Monday U.P. crews are still working to clear the debris and organize the wreckage for disposal.
