A 66 year-old man from Dalhart Texas, died Thursday in a single-vehicle accident on Interstate 40, approximately 25 miles west of Tucumcari, according to New Mexico State Police.
At 8:53 a.m., police were summoned to a crash with injuries. On arrival, the driver of the vehicle -- Robert Walker -- was located lying off the westbound shoulder of the roadway. An investigation revealed Walker was traveling west on I-40 when he lost control of his vehicle on the wet and icy roadway. The vehicle left the roadway and crashed into an embankment, ejecting Walker from the vehicle, police said
Police said Walker died at the scene. A contributing factor for the crash appears to be the inclement weather, which had caused the roadway to become icy. Walker was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, which contributed to his ejection from the vehicle, police said.
