A writer and musician will travel through Tucumcari Wednesday as part of his eight state Route 66 book signing and concert tour.
Bob Saar of Burlington, Iowa, set out Aug. 15 to promote his self-published book “In Memory of David’s Buick ” on a tour along Route 66.
“The reason I am doing this tour on Route 66 is because it is iconic magnetic image of those growing up in the 60's,” Saar said. “I made a point of going through Tucumcari, it had to be part of this tour.”
Saar said the image of downtown Tucumcari comes to mind when he thinks of Route 66.
“I can close my eyes and hear those lyrics from Little Feats’ song, Willin,’ ” said Saar. “I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari, Tehachapi to Tonapah. Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made.”
Saar said his book is about a rock and roll musician named Bucky who wrote
a ballad for his brother David, a soldier missing in Vietnam in the 60’s. Bucky takes his brother's classic Buick Electra 225 and heads west to set the record straight.
Saar said a book signing and concert series was his idea, and his manager suggested the trip be made in a 1966 Buick Electra 225 convertible.
“It is a different experience traveling along 66 in the Buick,” Saar said.
Fellow musician and book character Pat Hazel joined Saar’s tour.
“I could not think of a fictional name for Pat,” Saar said. “So I just wrote him in as Pat Hazel.”
Hazel said he grew up with Saar in Burlington and is a longtime friend.
“This tour is really exciting to me on so many aspects,” Hazel said. “ The whole idea appealed to me. I had never played in that region of Oklahoma or New Mexico. Plus, I get to drive the Buick.”
Saar said the signing and concert will be held on Route 66 at the Tucumcari Convention Center.
“At the monument, I will conduct a Horn-u-copia if I can get a half-dozen vintage cars to join us,” Saar said. “It is a composition for car horns which I wrote and want to debut it in Tucumcari.”
