Tucumcari — Officers responding to a Domestic Dispute incident turned deadly after Daniel Gonzales, 56, of Tucumcari prompted the use of deadly force.
Law Enforcement agencies responded to Laughlin St. in Tucumcari just after 4:00 PM yesterday afternoon for a reported Domestic Violence incident.
The officers learned during their initial investigation that a domestic dispute had taken place between Gonzales and his ex-wife, she and the grandkids were able to vacate the residence.
Upon the officer’s arrival, Gonzales would only speak to officers through the screen door, refusing to come out and cooperate. During the responding officers initial encounter with Gonzales he pointed the rifle at the officers while they took cover, this immediately prompted the call for State Police Tactical members who summonsed local resources from the Albuquerque Police Department.
Officers established a perimeter and within hours Tactical Resources were on scene to include a State Police Crisis Negotiator who spoke with Gonzales on the telephone for over an hour and a half. At approximately 10:30 PM Gonzales appeared at the front door bearing shotguns in both hands threatening officers, shots were fired by Albuquerque SWAT fatally striking Gonzales. The ongoing investigation will be conducted by the State Police Investigations Bureau and once completed their findings will
be submitted to the District Attorney’s office in Quay County for their review.
