Four Quay County schools failed to meet the State’s Adequate Yearly Progress goals for 2010.

According to results released Monday by the New Mexico Public Education Department, House High School, Logan High School, San Jon Middle School and Tucumcari Middle School did not met AYP goals.

Each of those schools failed to meet the math performance goal. Elementary students are tested in grades three to eight and high school students in their junior years on reading and math.

Logan Municipal Schools had met AYP goals for past three years said Superintendent Richard Hazen.

“We are developing a system to introduce Algebra earlier to the students,” Hazen said.

Hazen said the eighth-grade students will be introduced to Algebra I followed by Algebra II and Geometry their freshman and sophomore years.

“The juniors were tested for AYP and the test they took was difficult,” Hazen said. “There was a lot of Algebra II on that test. They had just begun to learn about Algebra II at that point.

“It may take some time to develop, but we will get things worked out,” Hazen said. “This should not reflect negatively on the students or the teachers.”

Tucumcari Elementary and Tucumcari High School both met AYP this year, after missing the benchmarks in 2009.

“It is always good to see a school improve over the course of a year,” said Tucumcari Superintendent Aaron McKinney.

McKinney said the schools has been working with math and reading consultant groups, and throughout the process have been charting progress.

“Short cycle testing the year before the state test helps us to determine where the student needs improvement,” McKinney said.

Attempts to contact House and San Jon school officials was unsuccessful. Both schools met AYP benchmarks at their elementary and high school campuses.
