Area schools are holding early registration and screening for Kindergarten students for the 2010-2011 school year.
Tucumcari and Logan Elementaries will be holding “Child Find” early registration and developmental screenings for children who will turn five years old before Sept. 1.
Logan Elementary will hold their “Child Find” registration day on Thursday and Tucumcari Elementary will hold theirs on Friday.
This will give us an opportunity to see how many students we will have enroll in preschool and Kindergarten, said Liz Burn, Logan preschool teacher.
“It is very helpful to know how many students to expect next year,” said Michelle Collins, Tucumcari elementary speech pathologist.
While the registration is just part of the day as staff with the Quay County Health Office will be present for Immunization for children and ENMRSH Inc. and the Maternal Child and Community Health Council (MCCA) will be conducting screenings.
Collins said the type of screenings that are done include social skills, speech, vision, and hearing.
“By holding the screening now we can determine what type of help anad services they may need,” Collins said. “If a child needs speech therapy, it is better to know now so we can get them the help they will need.”
Collins said this option is better then trying to identify the services a child needs and attempt to address that as the school year progresses.
“We want to make sure that the child’s skills are at an age appropriate level,” Collins said.
Another type of screening performed checks the fine and gross motor skills of the child.
Fine motor skills test the use of the hands and fingers together such as handwriting, said Occupation Therapist Assistant Heidi McEwen. She said gross motor skills include jumping and balance.
San Jon has already held their “Child Find” and House will hold their on May 12.
