The fire followed the fence line of property on Highway 104, and was confined to two hay sheds.

Dozens of firefighters responded early this afternoon to a grass and hay fire on State Highway 104 north of Tucumcari.

The fire followed a fence line and was confined to two storage areas for hay at a residence about 4 miles north of  downtown Tucumcari.

Three departments responded to the fire, said Tucumcari Fire Chief Mike Cherry.

Tanker trucks continued to bring water to the fire more than an hour after it was reported at 12:30 p.m. Two large stacks of hay caught fire and it  will take several hours for them to be extinguished, Cherry said.

Arch Hurley Conservancy District tanker trucks and personnel assisted in bringing the fire under control, and are continuing to help with bringing water to the site, Cherry said.

Several ranchers and farmers in the area were also bringing water to the scene to help fight the fire.

Cherry said the cause of the fire was not known.
