A Tucumcari man who was hit by a train two weeks ago says he "didn't see the darn train," and that he's a very lucky man.

"The doctors and everybody say I am very, very lucky," said Isaac Pacheco, Jr., 46.

Pacheco who is at Northwest Hospital in Amarillo was interviewed by phone on Friday.

Following his accident at the tracks crossing north Rock Island on the afternoon of Dec. 12, Pacheco was airlifted to Amarillo for treatment.
"I was in intensive care for a couple days," said Pacheco, who is now in a regular hospital room.

The accident is "like a dream," Pacheco said.

"I was walking back home and cut across the tracks. I didn't see the darn train.  I didn't hear nothing and I got hit. It wasn't going very fast at all."
"I don't drink and I have never ever taken drugs," said Pacheco.

But Pacheco said he does have problems with his eyesight.

Walking with Pacheco was his five-year-old dog, Duran, a Black Saddleback German Shepherd. "I miss my dog," Pacheco said.

The dog was on a leash held by Pacheco and "they say my dog pulled me. He saved my life," Pacheco said.

For Christmas Pacheco said his father, Isaac Pacheco, Sr. and his mother, Andrita, and his sister Veronica Pacheco came to visit. 
However, it was not the Christmas that he had envisioned "being in the hospital and being hurt," Pacheco said.

Pacheco said he initially underwent surgery and that pins were placed in his leg.

Most of the injuries he sustained are on his left side, Pacecho said. "I've got three broken bones."

Pacheco said his left arm and left leg and ankle were broken.

The doctors told him Friday morning he is scheduled for another surgery in about a week, Pacecho said.

"They say it looks like everything is going to be OK, but we have to wait until after the surgery,” he said.
