A 19-year-old Tucumcari man was shot about 8 p.m. Monday, Tucumcari Police Chief Roger Hatcher said.
Nikko Nathan is the man who was shot, Hatcher said.
Nathan was taken to Dan C. Trigg Memorial Hospital and was transported to Northwestern Hospital, Hatcher said.
He had received a wound to the left buttocks, Hatcher said.
Nathan's uncle, George Aragon, who was at the hospital Tuesday morning said that Nathan had had internal bleeding. "He is stable," Aragon said. Doctors would know more after Nathan had come from the recovery room, Aragon said.
The victim and two others were walking in the alley by the Trinity Baptist Church parking lot, between Hines Street and Route 66 Boulevard, when the shooting occurred, Hatcher said.
Several shots were fired. Hatcher said he believes they came from Hines Street between the Bubbles video rental shop and the Quay County Sun building across south First Street.
Police were seeking a search warrant to examine a van that may have a bullet inside.
Hatcher said he did not have a suspect's name.
"We have been blessed that no one else has been shot," he said. "This was a total disregard for the community's safety.
"We are asking the community to step forward and help us out. Someone knows who did this. Let's take this through the justice system and get the gangsters off the streets," Hatcher said.
The chief asked anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 461-3507 or the Tucumcari Police Department at 461-2160. Crime Stoppers calls are anonymous.
