Young readers caught the reading bug on Thursday with storyteller Judy Pancoast. The program kicked off the Tucumcari Public Library’s summer reading program. Pancoast led the children in song and dance moves as they covered some of the children’s well known book series from Curious George to Goosebumps. So far, 190 children are enrolled in the summer program, said Dainetta Kroeker, assistant librarian. Enrollment is ongoing at the library.

 

San Jon’s Mitchell a FFA state star
Lisa Mitchell of San Jon was one of the New Mexico FFA members who received proficiency and state star awards during the 80th Annual New Mexico FFA State Convention June 2-4 in Las Cruces at New Mexico State University, according to a press release.
Each of the students received their awards for taking part in a supervised agricultural experience (SAE). SAEs are designed to help prepare students for a career in agriculture in a specific field of interest.
Mitchell, a San Jon FFA member, was the diversified livestock proficiency award winner. Mitchell has improved the scope of her breeding beef cattle and show animals by improving nutrition and extensive vaccination, according to the award notice.

ENMU announces
honor students
Four students from Quay County who are attending Eastern New Mexico University are on the 2008 spring semester Dean’s Honor Roll.
They are:
l Rebekah Joy Carnes and Crystal J. Terrell who graduated from San Jon High School.
l Brandi Simone Arenas and Candance Harris who graduated from Tucumcari High School.
To be eligible for the Dean’s Honor Roll students must complete a minimum of 15 hours for the semester and maintain a 3.25 GPA.

Porter reunion set
for Aug. 30
The Porter School and Community Reunion will be Aug. 30 at the San Jon Community Center. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and is $12 per person. A dance will be held that evening at 7 p.m., admission is $5 per person and community friends will be welcome. Music will be provided by Monte Sasser.
Porter was established in 1907. The first school records began in 1917. The first eighth grade graduation was held in 1922 and the first accredited ssenior class graduated in 1926. Porter consolidated with San Jon School in 1955.
