For Jimmy Sandoval the second time is a charm � even if it is a squeaker. In Tuesday�s District 2 municipal election, Sandoval received 62 votes compared to incumbent Christopher Maestas who recieved 60 votes in the Tucumcari City Commission race. �It�s unofficial, I�ll wait until 4 p.m. tomorrow� when the votes are verified, Sandoval said. The first time Sandoval and Maestas met on the ballot four years ago, each garnered 67 votes. Sandoval lost when the cards were drawn. Maestas, who has served a total of 14 years on the commission, said, �That�s what the people want.� Sandoval said he campaigned door-to-door, visiting nearly every home in his district. �I worked it hard,� said Sandoval. Sandoval is retired from the New Mexico Department of Transportation, and he serves as a trustee on the board of Mesalands Community College. Other incumbents running in the election retained their seats on the city commission. Turnout at Tuesday�s election �was better than I expected,� said Tucumcari city clerk Jeannette Maddaford. Of the 2,281 eligible voters, 347, or 15.2 percent, came out to vote. This compares with 15.75 percent, or 500 of the 3,174 eligible voters who cast their ballots in the 2006 municipal election, Maddaford said. In the elections in Logan, council member Steve Garcia was the only candidate who saw some competition with a win of 43 votes. "It was a real close race and I am thankful for all the support from the community and voters that I received," Garcia said. "I have been on the council for 21 years and people know that I will work hard for them. I am glad that I have an opportunity to continue working for the citizens of Logan." Each municipality is scheduled to have its election votes verified or canvassed. Today at 4 p.m. votes in Tucumcari will be verified by Quay County Magistrate Judge Joel Garnett, Maddaford said. Newly elected commissioners will be sworn in at 4 p.m. on Friday at City Hall, Maddaford said. Quay County Sun staff reporter Thomas Garcia contributed to this report.
