Seven Rattler wrestlers placed at the Cardinal Classic Tournament on Friday and Saturday at Las Vegas. The Tucumcari Rattlers wrestling team competed in the two-day, round-robin event at Robertson High School. The 2A Rattlers were up against teams from 4A Belen, 4A Shiprock, 5A Los Lunas and Liberal, Kan., which won the tournament. The competition at this tournament was tougher than what will be seen at the state tournament, said Rattlers wrestling coach Eddie Encinias. The Rattlers matches were based on the first day’s performance and broken up into three divisions, gold, silver and bronze. “The guys did very well at this tournament,” Encinias said. “We had some place, and those that did not place still wrestled very well.” The Rattlers are looking to get as much experience and wins at the next event, a two-day tournament in Roswell before the final eight are chosen for each weight class for district competition. “Only the top eight wrestlers in each weight class will be selected for state competition,” Encinias said. “It is all based on the win-loss percentage of each wrestler and we have several wrestlers on the bubble.” Cardinal Classic Individual results Gold bracket place weight Raymond Jimenez, third 103 Michael Fazekas, fourth 130 Silver bracket Matt Pacheco, fifth 138 Wesley Martinez, third 152 Josh Enriquez, fourth 215 Leroy Sena fourth 275 Bronze bracket Casey Romero, fifth 112 The Rattlers next tournament is Friday at Roswell High School.
