It's up to each of us to make the best of 2008

We seem to change calendars all too frequently as the years pass more rapidly than ever. 'Tis hard to believe that we have really gone through 12 months since we last hung a new calendar, but according to the one on the wall, we have reached the last page. As we look back on 2007, some of us are probably wondering what really happened to all those days and weeks and realize that we didn't accomplish all that we should have. On the other hand, at this age (meaning older than dirt), what should we really be accomplishing that we missed? Obviously, the list for this woman from lma would be too long to print in such a short essay and would cause a major fit of depression to see such a list spread out before me. Trying to express my feelings about this past year is a bit more difficult than usual because of the rather different experiences I had early on. That bout with a bit of illness sort of left me reeling, but it also made me more aware than ever of the wonderful friends I have and of just how fortunate I am to live here at home. To have received the care and to have heard of the concern overwhelmed me but gave me the courage to go on to see what might lie around the next bend. Of course, no words are adequate with which to express my appreciation for all you dear friends did, but please suffice it to say that I love each of you dearly and can but hope I will be able to repay your kindness. Such a debt certainly gives one a reason to look forward to the New Year and the possibility of being able to repay a small portion of it. Now, let's not ask for repayment in kind because that would mean that you would have to become ill, and that just must not happen. Let's see if we can come up with other methods of showing appreciation. That will require a bit of creativity and a lot of thought, but something will be done to let you know how much you are appreciated. No, I'm not about to make a New Year's resolution as that would go down the tubes in one big hurry, but I can quietly plan to do something sometime in the future that might let you know a little about how much you are appreciated. As we begin a new year, we often wonder what lies ahead and can but hope that we will have a good year. We know that we will have good times and maybe a few bad ones, and we also know that we can make the year a good one if we really put our minds to it. We tend to be able to make the most of each year if we so choose, and it is up to us to make the choice. If we can just do a bit of positive thinking, we will be off to a good start. If we will greet each day with thankfulness and try to accomplish at least one thing during that day, we will be making the most of a good life. Let's just continue to meet and greet each other in our Southwestern tradition and wish each other a happy and prosperous New Year.
