Weekend vehicle accident results in fatality

A weekend car wreck resulted in the death of a Florida woman and sent a man to an Amarillo hospital. The accident happened at 7:23 a.m on Saturday, 15 miles east of Tucumcari on Interstate 40. New Mexico State Police Lt. Cleo Baker reported a Toyota pickup pulling a U-Haul trailer traveling west on I-40 drifted off the right shoulder of the road. The driver overcorrected, overturning the vehicle on the west-bound shoulder, Baker said. The driver of the vehicle, Louis Rodriguez, 45, of Kissimmee Fla., was ejected from the vehicle and transported to an Amarillo hospital, where his condition was unknown. The passenger, Karen Russo 42, of Kissimmee, died while being transported to the hospital, Baker said. Rodriguez is in Intensive Care at at Northwest Texas Healthcare Systems in Amarillo. No further information is available at this time regarding his condition. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seat belt, Baker said.
