Tucumcari Altrusa International netted more than $11,000 during its annual "cash party" fund-raiser, which wrapped up Saturday night at the Tucumcari Elks Lodge. Quay County Sun Managing Editor Chelle Delaney picked up the top prize in the raffle — $15,000 in cash. "I was very excited and shocked," Delaney said. "I called several of my friends to tell them I won. They didn't believe me at first. And one told me, 'Wait two days, and calm down, before you decide to spend any of the money.'" Barbara Cherry, the organization's president, said 274 raffle tickets were sold for $100 each. Profits will go back into the community, she said. Some of the proceeds from the event were used to pay for Saturday's meal and entertainment. Martin Encinias of the Elks Lodge prepared the meal and live music came from the band Limited Edition. Ellen White, who chaired Altrusa's fund-raiser, said 22 prizes were donated by area businesses in addition to the grand prize and the second prize of $500, won by Tucumcari's LaRose Szaloy. "We sold out of tickets faster then we did last year," White said. "This was the best fund-raiser to generate money for the Quay County area." White said Delaney donated an undisclosed portion of her winnings back to Altrusa. Altrusa supports numerous community projects, including a library fund and school events.
