Mesalands continues steps toward wind center

An interconnection application between Xcel Energy and Mesalands Community College for its wind center was reviewed at the Mesalands board of trustees meeting Tuesday night. “This application is another step forward in the development of the North American Wind Research & Training Center here at Mesalands,” said Mesalands president Phillip O. Barry. The application will allow Xcel to determine if the center’s planned wind turbine can be connected to the main power grid. And how the existing power grid will react to the additional power generated from the wind turbine, Barry said. In other matters before the board: l The new physical examination forms were presented by Aaron Kennedy, the college's Dean of Student Services. The forms will be mandatory for any student wanting to participate in the rodeo program. The form will allow the college to know if the athlete had any pre-existing medical condition and if they are medically cleared to compete. l The purchase of a residential lot at the corner of South Ninth Street and Miel De Luna Avenue was approved at the price of $3,500, for the Building Trades Program at Mesalands. The lot will be the site of a three-bedroom, two bath home to be built by the students of the Building and Trades Program. The plan was first presented to the board of trustees by Mesalands Building Trades instructor Joel Farmer at its Aug. 14 meeting. For Mesalands to proceed with the project, they had to complete the required HUD paperwork and have an archeological survey and an environmental impact study conducted. l A 10-year comparison of financial aid programs, from 1997 to 2007 was presented by David Gallatin, dean of Administrative Services. It showed that in the 1997-1998 school year 153 students benefited from $131,098 in federal, state, institutional and third party awards compared to the 2006-2007 when 633 students benefited from $954,464 in the same type of awards.
