Tucumcari schools superintendent Aaron McKinney’s salary was bumped to $100,000 at Tuesday’s school board meeting. School board members met in a closed session for more than an hour to discuss McKinney’s mid-year review. School board chairman Albert J. Mitchell said McKinney’s salary, compared to other school districts in the state, was one of the lowest. In other business discussed by the board: l A system of pay for teachers and other staff, such as the yearbook teacher sponsor, honor society sponsor, cheerleading coaches and athletic coaches. The board asked the staff to come up with a system. l Approved a moving assistance incentive of up to $3,000 to be given to new teachers coming to Tucumcari. It can be given at the discretion of McKinney and any additional incentive needs to have board approval. McKinney said the school was competing against other school districts, such as those in Texas, which were offering $5,000 signing bonuses. Recruiting math and science teachers is a priority for the school and the incentive may help in recruitment, McKinney said.
