Children at the First Spanish Baptist Church are wild with praise. Jungle Jaunt is the theme for their summer vacation bible school.
The Bible school is being held jointly by the Trinity, Immanuel and First Spanish Baptist Churches. There are 37 children enrolled and 12 volunteer teachers.
“We found it is better for the three churches to work together in sharing the expense and work of the Bible school rather each holding a separate one,” said Martha Whitesides. “We are pleased with how it turned out this year and look forward to doing it again next year.”
The children participate in a morning worship and song then they participate in making arts and craft, and recreation activities. Stuffed exotic animals line the walls in the arts and craft section and throughout the church there are jungle theme biblical lessons.
Some of the arts and crafts made by the children were picture frames, name tags and posters.
“I drew a picture of when Jesus died on the cross and an angel came down to him,” said 7-year-old Kayla Cherry.
The recreation activities included musical chairs and a game called stepping stones . Stepping stones is a game in which the children walk around on stone shaped cutouts on the floor that have letters written on them, said volunteer Nelda Burson. The children walk until told to stop and them choose a letter from the stone and name one of God’s creations, said Burson.
“I like that we get to learn about God and makes arts and crafts,” said 9-year-old Noah Marquez.
