Two Quay seniors qualify for nationals

Two Tucumcari senior Olympians, Celso Blea and Gilbert Romero, qualified for the 2007 National Senior Olympics in June 24-July 5 at Louisville, Ky. Blea and Romero qualified to go the nationals as a result of their scores from the New Mexico State Senior Olympics held Aug. 1-5, 2006 at Albuquerque. Blea will compete in horseshoes and javelin and Romero will participate in the table tennis competition. “This is the first time since 1980 that anyone from the Quay County area has qualified to go to the national competition,” said Corene Medcalf , coordinator of the Tucumcari Senior Olympics. Medcalf also said, “The athletes would greatly appreciate any help to cover the expenses of going to Kentucky.” The local Senior Olympic games will be in May and the State competition is Aug. 3-5 at Las Cruces.
