School seeks volunteers for steering committee

The Tucumcari School system is looking for a few good men and women. "We would like them to serve on the Facilities Steering Committee," said acting school Superintendent Aaron McKinney. "Ideally, we would have 10 to 14 people,” McKinney said. “You don't want it too small or large. But, all who want to participate can be on the steering committee.” The steering committee's role is to make recommendations to the school board about improvements to existing facilities and possible new construction. Their recommendations will be considered for the school's master facilities plan, which will serve as blueprint for several years into the future. The committee's recommendations are being sought in anticipation of a $2.65 million proposed bond issue, McKinney said. The school district has a certain property tax rate that's in place, said Paul Cassidy, managing director of RBC Capital Markets, which has handled the school's bond issues for about 20 years. "The school system has a certain debt capacity and, with the retirement of portions of previous bond issues, we can issue another bond program without a tax increase," Cassidy said. The proposed bond issue could be less or more, depending on what the school system's master facilities plan calls for, Cassidy said. The proposed bond program will be put to a ballot on Feb. 6, the same time that the regular school board elections are to be held. However, before the bond program can come before the voters, it will have to approved by the school board, which is expected at their Nov. 20 board meeting, McKinney said. The school board and parents have raised concerns about certain buildings at the schools, mainly at the high school, where a multi-purpose room, formerly an area used for shop classes, is being used as a dining area, the need for a new stadium and other improvements. The first meeting of the steering committee will be in early October, McKinney said. To volunteer for the steering committee and for more information, call the Tucumcari Public Schools administration office at 461-3910. The deadline to volunteer is Sept. 28.
