The Tucumcari Rattlers will match up against the Estancia Bears at 7 p.m. on Friday in Estancia. The Class 2A state runnerup Rattlers go into this match 0-2 with losses against Class 3A St. Michael’s and Class 4A Capital. Being 0-2 isn’t exactly the start Rattler coach Dub Smith would like, but he thinks Tucumcari will be better for the experiences of the first two weeks. “We played well against the larger schools,” Smith said. “We made a few mistakes but we have been working on those in practice. We knew our schedule was going to be tough this year but we are confident in our team and our outstanding coaching staff.” Smith added, “We feel we will have our first win of the season on Friday against Estancia.” Smith said he is hopeful and appreciative of any support the team can get on the road. The host Bears go into Friday night’s game 1-1. They lost their season opener at home against Capitan 71-36 on Aug. 25 and won on the road against Laguna-Acoma 20-8 on Friday. The Rattler junior high football team will play Thursday in Tucumcari at 4:30 p.m. against Texico Junior High. The Rattler JV football team will have their next match-up in Tucumcari against Estancia JV at 11 a.m.
